What is artificial lure?

Artificial lure is artificial bait, usually made of plastic, rubber or metal. Unlike natural bait, artificial lures only move when you give them action: by reeling in, tapping or 'jerking' with the rod. • Plugs: imitation fish with a lip that dive underwater during retrieval. Ideal for pike, zander and perch.

• Jerkbaits: sinking or floating artificial lures without a lip. You give them action by giving short taps with the rod. Especially popular for pike.

• Swimbaits: multi-jointed imitation fish with a natural swimming motion. Suitable for casting and trolling.

• Shads: soft rubber lures, perfect for vertical jigging, dropshotting and jigging. Especially effective for zander and perch.

• Spinners & spoons: classic artificial lures that can be fished quickly and cause a lot of vibration and flash. Ideal for beginner predatory fish anglers.

Artificial lures per fish species

• Pike: large plugs, jerkbaits, swimbaits and shads of 10 cm or more. Use steel or thick fluorocarbon as leader.

• Zander: shads on a jighead, deep-diving plugs. Fish close to the bottom with slow, subtle action.

• Perch: small plugs, spinners, shads of 4-7 cm. Fluorocarbon leader recommended.

• Trout: small plugs, spoons, imitation insects and soft trout dough. Light material and fine presentation.

• Asp: slim, fast-fished plugs and spinners of 5-7 cm. Speed is the key to success here.

Tips for successful fishing with artificial lures

Make sure your tackle box is well stocked with different types and sizes of artificial lures, tailored to the season, the water and the weather conditions. Use natural colors in clear water, and choose bright, contrasting patterns in murky water. Adjust your technique: vary speeds, pauses and taps to challenge the fish.
