Catching trout with the Tremarella rod: vibrating for success

Tremarella is the finesse technique for trout fishing in ponds and pits. The accompanying Tremarella rod is specially designed to present your bait in a subtle, vibrating way. This Italian technique is winning more and more anglers' hearts, and rightly so – it is one of the most effective ways to entice trout to bite.

What is a Tremarella rod?

A Tremarella rod is a long, light rod with an extremely sensitive tip. The length usually varies from 3.60 to 4.20 meters. The goal? By making small shaking movements with the rod (tremarella) you give vibrations to your bait. This vibration – enhanced by special glass sinkers – attracts curious trout.

The tip of a Tremarella rod is so sensitive that even the slightest tap is noticeable. You can fish very subtly with it, especially in ponds where the fishing pressure is high. Brands like Troutlook and Mitchell offer high-quality rods that are fully tailored to this fishery.

The ideal setup for Tremarella fishing

For this technique, you use a light spinning reel in size 1000 or 2000, combined with a supple nylon main line of 0.18 to 0.25 mm. Thin lines ensure a natural presentation and better bite detection. For the leader, choose nylon of 0.14 to 0.20 mm and a trout hook in size 8 to 12.

Various rigs are possible, such as with glass sinkers, ghost sinkers, or a Sbirolino. Each rig has its own depth and movement, allowing you to respond well to the behavior of the trout.

What bait do you use with the Tremarella technique?

Trout dough, wax moth larvae, and mealworms are the most popular bait types for this fishery. For extra attraction, use plastic larvae in bright colors. Make sure to rig the bait well so that it moves naturally and stays firmly on the hook.

You can shape trout dough into a drop or tail, depending on how you want to retrieve it. Move the rod rhythmically up and down while retrieving – the ‘tremarella’ – and hold your rod at an angle. This movement creates vibrations that are irresistible to trout.

When and where does Tremarella work best?

Tremarella works perfectly in trout ponds, especially in heavily fished spots where trout are used to passive bait presentations. By fishing actively with vibration and movement, you stimulate even passive fish to bite. Especially on cooler days or in bright sunlight, this technique often provides just that little extra action.
