Dead bait rods: the right choice for pike fishing with baitfish
Fishing with dead bait is an exciting and effective way to target large pike. This method requires a specific rod that combines power, casting ability, and sensitivity. In this article, you will read what to look for when choosing a dead bait rod and how to perfectly assemble your equipment.
What is a dead bait rod and why is it special?
A dead bait rod is designed for fishing with dead baitfish such as roach, sardine, or mackerel. These fish can be quite heavy, especially combined with a lead rig or float. Therefore, a good dead bait rod has a casting weight of at least 60 to 70 grams and a length between 2.70 and 3.30 meters. This allows you to cast far and maintain control during the fight with a large pike.
Most dead bait rods have a parabolic or progressive action. This means they bend over a large part of the blank, making it smoother to fight strong fish. Some carp and heavy spinning rods can also serve well as dead bait rods, as long as they are sturdy enough.
The right reel and line for dead bait fishing
Because dead bait rods are relatively long and heavy, they require a sturdy reel. A model in size 4000 or 5000 is ideal: large enough for sufficient line capacity and strong enough for the heavier work. Preferably choose a reel with a baitrunner function. This allows the fish to take line without pulling your rod into the water.
For the line, braided line is almost always used. It has no stretch and ensures direct contact with your bait and bite detection. A thickness of 16/00 is usually sufficient, but for large pike and in obstacles, you can also choose 18/00 or 20/00. Don’t forget to use a strong leader: steel or fluorocarbon at least 30 cm long and 80/00 thick, so the sharp teeth of a pike have no chance.
Which rod suits your style of dead bait fishing?
Do you want to fish with a float? Then a rod with a softer action is pleasant, as it moves nicely with the bite and the float. Do you fish statically from the shore or at a distance? Then you need a sturdy rod with a lot of backbone to cast the baitfish well. Make sure your rod is suitable for use with a fishing reel – rods labeled "cast" or "jerk" are intended for reels and less suitable for dead bait fishing.
Do you have different rigs or fish at various spots? Then consider two rods with different lengths or casting weights, so you always have the right equipment at hand.
