The perfect streetfishing rod for action in the city
Streetfishing is extremely popular among predator anglers. With a light and compact rod, you roam along canals, bridges, and quays in search of perch, zander, and sometimes even pike. But what kind of rod do you use for that? Discover everything about the streetfishing rod here and how you make the right choice for your urban adventures.
What is a streetfishing rod?
A streetfishing rod is specially tuned for fishing in urban environments. You often have limited space and short casting distances, so a compact and light rod is ideal. Most streetfish rods are between 2.10 and 2.30 meters long and have a casting weight of up to about 25 grams. This allows you to fish comfortably with light softbaits, plugs or small jerkbaits.
The most important feature is sensitivity. A streetfishing rod must feel tight and direct, so you can feel even the subtlest bite, even when using dropshot or finesse techniques. Some brands offer special streetfishing models, but a light spinning rod or dropshot rod often works just fine – as long as it is not too heavy or too long.
The ideal combination: reel and line
A light rod calls for a matching reel. Choose a reel in size 500 to 2000, depending on the rod length. For a 2.10 meter rod, a size 500 - 1000 is perfect. For slightly longer or heavier models, a size 2000 is also a good choice.
Combine this with a thin braided line, for example 10/00 or 12/00. These lines have no stretch and provide maximum control and feel. In obstacle-free situations, you can even go for an even thinner line, such as 8/00. Also, don't forget to use a strong fluorocarbon or thin steel leader, because the chance of a pike is always present in city waters.
Practical tips for streetfishing
Streetfishing requires a smart and mobile approach. Move around a lot, try different spots such as bridges, quay walls, or houseboats. Use compact gear and don't bring too much – a backpack with landing net and unhooking mat is often enough. Pay extra attention in busy areas: keep your belongings together and watch your surroundings.
Use techniques like dropshotting and jigging to fish hard-to-reach spots precisely. Alternate with small shads, plugs, or spoons and adjust your bait size to the conditions. Don't forget to have your permit in order – in the city, checks are more frequent than outside built-up areas.
