Fly fishing rods: the art of precision and finesse
Fly fishing is perhaps the most elegant and technical form of sport fishing. It’s all about control, feeling, and timing – and that starts with the right rod. Fly fishing rods are specially designed to accurately present light flies with a heavier line. Are you looking for your first or next fly fishing rod? Then keep reading.
What makes a fly fishing rod unique?
Unlike spinning rods, where the lure provides the weight, fly fishing uses the line to cast. The rod is therefore matched to the weight of the fly fishing line – indicated in AFTMA classes (often noted as #4, #5, etc.). The higher the number, the heavier the line and the rod. This system ensures that rod, line, and reel must be perfectly balanced.
A standard fly fishing rod is between 2.40 and 3.00 meters long, with many fine guides that smoothly guide the heavy line. The longer the rod, the further you can cast, but it also requires more technique. For beginners, a soft (slow) action is often easier to learn casting with than a stiff (fast) action.
Which AFTMA class do you need?
The right class depends on your target fish and the type of water:
-
AFTMA 0 – 2: ultralight fishing for small brook trout or dace
-
AFTMA 3 – 4: light fishing for roach, perch, and trout
-
AFTMA 5 – 6: all-round, also for light pike streamers or carp
-
AFTMA 7 – 8: heavier work such as pike or sea trout
-
AFTMA 9 – 10: for strong currents or large fish
-
AFTMA 11+: big game fishing at sea
In the Benelux, a class #4 to #6 is ideal to start with. This covers most waters and fish species.
Rod, line, and reel: everything must match
Balance is essential in fly fishing. Make sure the AFTMA class of your rod, reel, and line is identical. If you choose a rod in #5, then the line and reel should also be in class #5. A light fly fishing reel is sufficient, as you don’t use it to actively cast but mainly as storage for the line and during the fight.
Many fly fishing rods are four- or even five-piece, making them perfect for travel. They easily fit in your suitcase or backpack and are quick to assemble.
Complete fly fishing sets: easy to start
For those who want to start fly fishing, complete sets are ideal. These contain a perfectly matched rod, reel, and line – often including a leader and a few artificial flies. Well-known brands like Abu Garcia and Shakespeare offer good entry-level sets for trout, perch, or pike.
