Fly Fishing Flies

Flies for fly fishing: refined artificial flies for every situation

Fly fishing is an art form in itself, where you try to entice predatory fish or trout to bite using light gear and lifelike imitations of insects. Choosing the right fly is essential: it must not only match the season but also the behavior of the fish at that moment.

Dry and wet flies

There are two main types of flies used in fly fishing: dry and wet flies. Dry flies float on the water surface and imitate insects that have just landed on the water – such as mosquitoes or mayflies. This technique is visually spectacular because you see the strike happen on the surface.

Wet flies are designed to fish underwater. They imitate larvae, caddisflies, and other underwater life. By letting the fly drift naturally with the current, you convincingly mimic the behavior of a prey animal.

Streamers: the larger prey

In addition to classic flies, you can also use streamers. These are larger patterns that imitate small fish. They are perfect for predatory fish such as pike, perch, or trout. Streamers often sink and have a lot of action in the water, triggering predatory fish to attack.

Choosing the right fly

The art of fly fishing lies in observing: which insect is flying around, what is on the water, where are the fish feeding? This way, you choose a fly that perfectly matches the natural supply. In clear water, natural colors work best, while in murky water, it is better to choose contrasting or striking patterns.

For surface fishing with dry flies, use a floating line and a long, flexible leader. For wet flies and streamers, sinking or intermediate lines are a better choice so you can present your fly at the right depth.
