Fly fishing lines: indispensable for every fly fisherman
A good fly fishing line is crucial for successful fly fishing. Because you fish with light artificial bait – the fly – the line must provide the weight to cast far. Your choice of line not only determines how you cast but also how your fly behaves in the water. Floating, sinking, or a combination: we help you choose the right fly fishing line for your fishing style.
What is a fly fishing line?
Unlike other fishing lines, a fly fishing line itself provides the weight with which you cast. These lines are flexible, often about 25 to 30 meters long, and at the end you attach a tapered nylon leader. This ensures a natural bait presentation. For extra line reserve, you use a nylon backing on your reel – handy if a big fish takes your line completely.
The right line for your rod: AFTMA classification
Every fly fishing line has an AFTMA weight that must match your rod. AFTMA 1 is ultra-light, AFTMA 15 extremely heavy. Most sport fishermen use a rod between 4WT and 8WT. For most situations, a floating line in WF (Weight Forward) version is perfect. Other types such as DT (Double Taper) and ST (Shooting Head) offer extra options for specific techniques.
Types of fly fishing lines
-
Floating lines: The most popular choice, especially for dry flies, nymphs, and light streamers. They float on the water surface and are ideal for beginner fly fishermen.
-
Sinking lines: Designed to sink quickly to depth. Perfect for lakes or deeper rivers, with sink rates indicated in inches per second (IPS).
-
Sinking tip lines: A hybrid of floating and sinking. Only the last part sinks, ideal for streamers in flowing water.
Specialist lines
For those who fish advanced, there are specific types such as:
Which fly fishing line suits you?
Choose your line based on:
-
The weight of your rod
-
The fishing technique (dry fly, streamer, nymph)
-
The type of water (river or lake)
-
Your experience and personal preference
Feel free to test different lines: a 6WT line on a 5WT rod can give just that little extra with a heavy fly. It’s all about balance and feel.
