What are dropshot hooks and how do they work?
Dropshot hooks differ from regular hooks because they stand perpendicular to the leader. Above the hook is the connection to your main line, and below the hook hangs a dropshot weight. This keeps your lure stable at the right depth – ideal for slow or cautious fish.
You often mount the hook with a palomar knot. If you prefer convenience, there are also dropshot hooks with an upward-facing eye or even a built-in swivel. You can attach these to your line in no time – no more tying knots and perfectly aligned.
Which hook size do you choose?
The right hook depends on your shad size. For small, fine shads up to about 7 cm, size 4 to 2 is ideal. For larger shads, choose a hook in size 1 or larger. Also pay attention to the shape: a wide hook bend ensures better hooking, especially if you fish with slightly thicker bait.
