Dropshot Rods

The best dropshot rods for every predator angler

Dropshotting is a refined and effective technique to catch predator fish. With a sensitive rod, subtle lures and a smart approach, you can even entice the most cautious perch or zander. But without the right dropshot rod, you won't get far. Discover below what to look for when choosing your ideal rod.

The right length and action for your dropshot rod

In dropshotting, sensitivity is everything. A good dropshot rod is between 2.00 and 3.00 meters long. If you mainly fish from the shore, a slightly longer rod is handy for long casts and fishing along obstacles. On the boat, you can manage well with a shorter rod around 2 meters, because you need to cast less.

Even more important is the action of the rod. A smooth tip action is crucial: you feel the slightest bite and can present your lure subtly. Make sure the rest of the rod has enough backbone to set the hook properly. Avoid parabolic rods – these bend over the entire length and lack the precision you need for dropshotting.

Casting weight and sensitivity: perfectly matched

The maximum casting weight of a dropshot rod is usually around 30 grams, but lighter is often better. For still water or lightly flowing water, 10 to 15 grams of weight is sufficient. If you fish at greater depths or in stronger currents, you can go up to 25 to 28 grams.

The lower the casting weight, the more sensitive the rod – and you notice that directly in your catches. You feel exactly what is happening underwater and react faster to bites. Combine this with a light dropshot weight and a small shad, and you have a setup that can entice any predator fish.

The best combination with reel and line

Dropshot rods perform best in combination with a braided line. This type of line has almost no stretch, which means you really feel everything happening underwater. A fluorocarbon leader completes the setup – discreet and strong.

As for the reel, size 1000 is perfect for light, short rods. If you use a somewhat longer and heavier rod, choose size 2000. This keeps the whole setup nicely balanced, providing more control, less fatigue, and more fishing pleasure.
