Why use special dropshot weights?
Dropshot weights differ from regular weights because they have a special shape and attachment. Most models feature a handy clip (line clip) that allows you to quickly attach the weight to your leader and just as easily swap it out. This lets you adjust your rig on the spot to current, water depth, or casting distance.
Rod-shaped weights (also called 'pencil' weights) are ideal for rough bottoms. Their narrow, elongated shape makes them less likely to snag between stones or obstacles. This makes them perfect for fishing on gravel bottoms or among rocks. On sandy bottoms or in open water, you can also use round or pear-shaped weights.
What weight dropshot weights do you need?
In still or slow-moving water, a weight of 5 to 10 grams is often sufficient. If you want to cast further or fish in deeper or flowing water, it’s better to choose 14 to even 28 grams. Always have multiple weights with you so you can switch as conditions change. If your rig doesn’t sink fast enough or you lose contact with the bottom, it’s time for a heavier weight.
Coating for less visibility
Because the weight is relatively close to the bait when dropshotting, some anglers choose a coated weight. A matte coating prevents reflection and makes your rig less conspicuous. This can make a difference, especially in clear water or with wary fish.
