A pelagic rod is designed for targeting predatory fish suspended in open water away from the bottom. Zander are often fished for pelagically: a fishfinder helps you locate an individual fish and present the lure as precisely as possible in front of it.
This style of fishing is all about control. A good pelagic rod is therefore relatively short and sensitive, with enough backbone to set the hook firmly. At the same time, you need to feel exactly what your lure is doing during the presentation.
Which pelagic rod do you need?
Pelagic fishing is usually done from a boat, so long casts are unnecessary. A compact rod gives you greater control when presenting the lure directly below or beside the boat.
A sensitive tip helps you detect lure movement and tentative bites, while a powerful blank is essential for setting the hook firmly into a zander. The right action and power depend on factors such as lure size and the fish you are targeting.
Pelagic fishing for zander
When fishing pelagically, you use a fishfinder to locate individual fish in the water column. You then lower the lure to the correct depth under full control and try to follow the fish's response.
Subtle pelagic softbaits are often used for this. V-Tail softbaits and other soft lures with little action of their own are also popular because they can be presented with exceptional control.
