V-tail softbaits, also called forktail softbaits, are soft lure fish with a split tail. In contrast to a classic shad with a paddle tail, they cause few vibrations. This makes them move very subtly and imitate an injured, fleeing or calmly swimming baitfish.

When Do You Use a V-Tail Softbait?
Forktail shads perform well in cold water and heavily fished waters. When predatory fish do not respond to the powerful vibrations of a paddle tail, the subtle shudder of a V-tail can still provoke a bite.
Smaller models are suitable for bass and finesse fishing. Larger V-tails can be used for zander and pike, both just above the bottom and higher in the water column. Realistic colors often work well in clear water, while bold colors offer more visibility in cloudy water.
V-Tails For Dropshotting and Verticals
When dropshotting, the V-tail is offered slightly above the lead. Small taps with the rod tip cause the fork tail to move subtly in almost the same place. To do this, combine the lure with a suitable one dropshot hook and dropshot lead.
V-tails are also excellent for verticals and diagonals. Mount the softbaits straight on a suitable jig head and move it with short, controlled taps just above the bottom. For pelagic fishing, larger models are often used to target predatory fish that swim freely in the water column.
