Catfish fishing is a true challenge and requires robust materials. The catfish is the largest freshwater fish in Europe – strong, massive, and not easily stopped. A special catfish rod is therefore not a luxury. Discover here which rod suits your style and fishing waters.

What is a catfish rod?

A catfish rod is designed to withstand extreme power. These rods have a sturdy body, a high test curve, and are resistant to the brute fighting power of catfish. They usually feature large, strong guides and a robust reel seat.

There are two main types:

• Bank models (3.30 – 3.60 meters): ideal for fishing from the shore. They offer extra casting distance and control over your rig.

• Boat models (1.90 – 3.00 meters): shorter, more compact, and perfect for fishing on or under the boat, where precision and handling are more important than distance.

Reel or spool?

Many catfish anglers choose a powerful reel, but a sturdy big pit spool with a high retrieve speed is also suitable. It is important that your rod is matched to this: a reel requires a trigger grip and guides on the top of the rod. If you choose a spool, make sure the rod is suitable for it.

Material and strength

Catfish rods are generally made of strong carbon or composite material, with extra reinforced blank and handle section. They are designed for fishing with heavy leaders, large baitfish, or lures such as fireballs, clonks, and buoy rigs. The casting weights often range between 200 and 500 grams.

Which rod do you choose?

• Beginner catfish angler: a heavy carp rod (3.50 lb) suffices in the Netherlands for the first sessions

• Active shore angler: choose a rod from 3.30 to 3.60 meters with plenty of casting power

• Boat angler: go for a shorter rod (around 2.40 meters) with plenty of body and flexibility
