Fishing with live bait
Live bait is still one of the most effective ways to catch fish. Whether you are looking for roach, bream, trout or sea bass – with naturally moving bait you even tempt the most shy fish. Especially in fishing ponds and at difficult fishing spots, live bait can make all the difference.
Popular types of live bait
There are different types of live bait, each with its own application and advantages. Below we list the most commonly used types:
Maggots
The absolute classic among live bait. Especially when fishing for whitefish such as roach, bream and chub, maggots are almost unbeatable. They are small, mobile and release scents in the water that attract fish.
Mealworms
Mealworms are a bit sturdier than maggots and are popular with larger whitefish and trout. Due to their crunchy shell, they stay well on the hook, even during longer casts.
Wax moths
These white larvae are very popular with trout anglers. They have a high protein content, lots of movement and emit an attractive scent. They are often combined with trout dough or artificial bait to provide extra triggering stimuli.
Earthworms & manure worms
Ideal for fishing larger whitefish, eel, perch and even carp. Due to their natural scent and sturdy build, they are particularly effective. At sea, they are sometimes also used as an alternative to ragworms.
Ragworms & lugworms
For sea fishing, ragworms (sea worms) and lugworms (sand worms) are the most popular live bait. They are indispensable when fishing for flatfish, sea bass and whiting. You usually fish them with a paternoster rig from the beach or the pier.
Grasshoppers, crickets & other insects
These are mainly used when fishing for perch or trout in ponds. Thanks to their natural appearance and fluttering movement, they are irresistible to predator fish.
Pay attention to the legislation in Belgium
In Belgium, it is forbidden to use live vertebrate animals, such as fish, as bait. Live bait such as maggots, worms, and insects is however allowed. Always make sure you comply with the applicable rules and permits, especially when fishing with live bait.
