Float fishing for coarse fish is accessible, educational and still particularly effective. Whether you are fishing for roach, bream, rudd or small tench: with a well-weighted float you see subtle bites that you would otherwise miss. It is also an ideal technique for beginner anglers who want to learn how fish react to bait, groundbait and depth.
For a strong foundation, look at Pole rods, floats, coarse fish hooks, coarse fish lead and Groundbait. With these you can already manage on many ponds, canals and urban waters.
Why float fishing works so well
A float gives immediate information. You not only see a bite, but also how the fish is feeding. Does the float slowly move sideways? Then the fish is taking the bait cautiously. Does it suddenly sink? Then the fish is feeding more aggressively. Does it come up? Then a fish may be lifting the lead.
It is precisely these signals that make float fishing so valuable. You can quickly adjust: fish lighter, use smaller bait, set deeper or adjust your Groundbait.

Which float do you choose?
The right float depends on current, wind, depth and distance. A float that is too light is difficult to control. A float that is too heavy shows less subtle bites. Therefore, choose not only by weight but also by shape.
| Float type | Best situation | Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Slim float | Still water, cautious fish | Very sensitive |
| Drop-shaped float | Light current or wind | Stable and clearly visible |
| Competition float | Precision fishing on a fixed spot | Sharp bite detection |
| Waggler | Fishing further from the shore | Good casting with match rod |
For fine fishing you can look at competition floats. If you prefer fishing with a spinning rod and reel, then coarse fish rods and coarse fish reels are interesting categories.
Assembly: how to build a simple coarse fish float rig
A basic float rig consists of main line, float, lead, hook length and hook. The goal is that the float only shows the tip above water. Then you see the bite much better than when the float sticks half out of the water.
| Component | All-round advice | When to adjust? |
|---|---|---|
| Main line | 0.12-0.16 mm nylon | Thinner in clear water, thicker near obstacles |
| Hook length | 0.08-0.12 mm | Thinner for cautious fish |
| Hook | Size 14-20 | Smaller for maggot, larger for corn |
| Lead | Spread or compact | Compact for faster sinking, spread for natural bait behavior |
| Float | 0.3-1.5 grams | Heavier with wind, depth or current |
Ready-made coarse fish hook lengths are handy if you want to quickly change hook size. For your main line you can look at coarse fish Fishing Lines.

Groundbait and bait for coarse fish
Groundbait does not need to be excessive. Especially on smaller waters it is better to build up slowly. Start with a few small balls of bait and then feed in small amounts. This keeps fish active without saturating them.

Sweet scents often work well for bream. An additive such as Marcel Van Den Eynde Bream Caramel can help give your bait extra attraction. Use a large bucket and sieve for mixing; see bait buckets and sieves for this.
| Fish species | Bait | Feeding approach |
|---|---|---|
| Roach | Maggot, caster, dough | Feed small amounts, keep active |
| Bream | Maggot, corn, worm | Sweet Groundbait, feed a bit more generously |
| Rudd | Maggot or caster | Fine bait and light rig |
| Tench | Corn, worm, pellet | Feed more calmly near plant edges |
Measuring depth makes the difference
Many beginners fish too high or too deep without realizing it. Therefore, first measure the bottom. For roach, the bait may just hang above or lightly on the bottom. For bream it often works well when the bait lies steadily on the bottom.
Also pay attention to where you feed. On canals the transition between slope and flat bottom is often interesting. On ponds edges of aquatic plants, shadow zones and spots with slightly deeper bottom are often good.
Common mistakes in float fishing
- Not weighting the float finely enough.
- Fishing too coarsely with too thick a line or too large a hook.
- Introducing too much Groundbait at once.
- Not measuring depth and therefore fishing above the fish.
- Striking too late on subtle bites.

Float fishing remains strong because you constantly get feedback from your rig. Those who weight their float well, feed calmly and set the depth correctly often catch more than anglers who only fish further or heavier.
