Sea bass rods: the perfect rod for the rugged coast

Sea bass fishing is one of the most exciting forms of sport fishing in the Netherlands and Belgium. But to fish effectively for these silver predators, you need a good sea bass rod. Depending on your spot and technique, you choose a specific rod that is resistant to saltwater, strong wind, and strong currents.

What should a sea bass rod meet?

A sea bass rod must be sturdy and durable. Because you fish in saltwater, it is important that all parts – such as guides and reel seat – are corrosion resistant. Rinse your rod with fresh water after each session to extend its lifespan. In addition, a sea bass rod must have enough power to cast further and be strong enough to handle the powerful runs of a sea bass.

For plugs, shads, and other lures, you generally use rods with a casting weight of 30 to 90 grams. A fast action rod helps you cast far and ensures a direct hook set.

Sea bass rod for shore anglers

Do you catch sea bass from the pier, a breakwater, or the beach? Then a rod of 3.00 to 3.60 meters is ideal. This length helps you cast over obstacles and increases your reach. The long rod also gives you more control over your line, especially in wind or waves. Do you use plugs or spoons of 20 to 40 grams? Then a rod with a casting weight up to 90 grams is perfect.

Sea bass rod for use from the boat

Do you go out on the North Sea or fish from a belly boat? Then a shorter rod between 2.10 and 2.50 meters is more practical. You don’t need to cast far from the boat, and a short rod is more maneuverable and less tiring during long sessions. Note: always choose a rod with enough backbone to handle heavy lure types well.

With the float or on the bottom

If you fish with a float or paternoster rig for sea bass, you don’t need a heavy rod. However, a longer rod is handy to avoid obstacles and position your bait accurately. For bottom fishing with anchor weights, it is better to use a real beach rod suitable for heavy weights and long casts.

Which reel with a sea bass rod?

A reel in size 4000 to 5000 is the perfect match. These offer enough line capacity and drag power, while still being light enough to fish comfortably with. Always choose a saltwater-resistant reel and preferably fish with braided line for maximum control and bite detection.
