Twitchbaits: irresistible lures for active predatory fishers
Twitchbaits are a smart choice for those looking for an active way to fish for predators. They resemble plugs but require a different approach. By bringing them to life yourself with taps of the rod, they imitate a wounded little fish – and that is exactly what predatory fish cannot resist.
What is a twitchbait?
A twitchbait is a slender plug with a relatively small diving lip. Because of this small lip, a twitchbait has less action on its own than, for example, a crankbait. This gives you as an angler the opportunity to determine the movement yourself. By giving short, sharp taps with your rod while retrieving (‘twitching’), the lure jumps nervously through the water – just like a dying little fish.
Such a skittish action arouses the curiosity and aggression of predatory fish such as perch, zander, and asp. Pike is also regularly tempted by a well-presented twitchbait.
When do you use a twitchbait?
Twitchbaits are effective all year round. In the colder months, it is best to choose a sinking or suspending variant that runs a bit deeper, because predatory fish often stay deeper then. In spring and summer, shallow-running or floating twitchbaits are ideal for fishing in the upper water layers.
The stop-and-go technique is recommended: let the twitchbait pause briefly between the twitch movements. This creates the illusion of a prey fish that no longer knows where to flee – an irresistible trigger for many predators.
The right equipment for twitchbaits
For fishing with twitchbaits, it is best to use a spinning rod of about 2.30 to 2.40 meters, with a casting weight of 10 to 30 grams. Combine this with a smooth reel and a thin braided line (8/00 to 10/00) for maximum control over your lure.
For the leader, you can choose fluorocarbon for subtle presentation. Are you fishing in water with lots of pike? Then definitely go for a steel leader to prevent line breakage.
