A good main line matters, but the final section of line often decides whether you land or lose a fish. Depending on the style of fishing, this section is called a leader, trace, shock leader or hooklength. Main line, leader, trace and hooklength: what is the difference?
The main line is wound onto your reel and affects casting distance, bite detection and control during the fight. A leader is the extra section between the main line and the rig, lure or hook. Fluorocarbon leaders: discreet and abrasion-resistant
Fluorocarbon is popular because it is less conspicuous underwater and resists abrasion from rocks, mussels, branches and hard structures. It is well suited to zander, perch, dropshotting, finesse techniques and clear water. It also sinks faster than mono, which can help keep a presentation close to the bottom.
Fluorocarbon is stiffer than mono. That can improve some presentations, but is less suitable where maximum suppleness is required. Tie knots carefully, moisten them and tighten them steadily: a poor knot can greatly reduce leader strength.
