Fishing reels: indispensable for every casting rod
A good fishing reel together with the right rod forms the basis of your fishing gear. Whether you are fishing for carp, predator fish, trout or bream – with the right reel you get more enjoyment and fish out of your session. At De Goeie Vangst you will find a wide range of fishing reels, from compact models for light spinning to robust free spool reels for carp or Big Pit reels for heavy work.
What exactly does a fishing reel do?
A fishing reel hangs under a casting rod and is used to spool fishing line on and off. During the fight, the drag of the reel releases line in a controlled manner, so you absorb the power of a fighting fish without line breakage. This way you can calmly and controlledly bring in the fish.
Important features of a fishing reel
-
Size: Choose the right size based on your fishing. A 1000 series is ideal for perch and trout, while a 6000-12000 series suits carp and sea fishing.
-
Drag: You have reels with front drag (drag on top of the spool) or rear drag (drag at the back). Both are effective; it is a matter of preference.
-
Free spool function: Indispensable for carp fishing. When a bite occurs, the fish can take line without your rod flying into the water.
-
Spool capacity: How much line fits on the spool depends on the thickness of your fishing line. Always check if the reel is suitable for your line choice.
-
Gear ratio: This transmission ratio determines how fast the reel retrieves the line. A ratio of 5.2:1 means the spool rotates 5.2 times per crank turn.
-
Ball bearings: The more (quality) ball bearings, the smoother and more durable the reel runs.
Which reel suits your fishing?
-
Spinning (perch, zander): Size 1000-2500, fast drag, lightweight
-
Carp fishing: Size 4000-10000, often with free spool function or Big Pit spool
-
Coarse fishing with the feeder: Size 3000-4000, strong drag, high retrieve speed
-
Trout fishing: Compact reels (size 500-1000), light and sensitive
-
Sea fishing from the beach or boat: Large spool capacity, saltwater resistant, robustly built (6000+)

Choose the right line for your fishing reel
Are you using a size 1000-2000 reel for light spinning? Then braided line of 0.08 mm is ideal. For carp and larger lures (reel size 4000+) you choose 0.16 mm or thicker. Also pay attention to the spool capacity: the thicker your line, the less fits on the spool.
