Surf rods: powerful casting from the shoreline

Surf fishing on the Dutch or Belgian coast is a unique fishery. With your feet in the sand, staring at the tip of your rod, waiting for that one bite from plaice, flounder or sea bass. The surf rod – also called a beachcaster – is your most important weapon for this: long, powerful and built to cast heavy rigs over long distances.

What is a surf rod?

A surf rod is a long, sturdy rod used to fish from the beach, a pier or a breakwater. With weights from 100 to sometimes 250 grams, you cast your rig over the surf, often further than 100 meters. Most surf rods are between 4.20 and 5.00 meters long and consist of three parts. The tip is often brightly colored for good bite detection, even in the dark.

You fish passively with it: cast, tighten the line, place the rod in a rod rest and wait for a bite. Usually, a paternoster rig with multiple hooks is attached to the line, baited with maggots, worms or pieces of fish.

What length and power do you need?

Which surf rod suits you best depends on your fishing spot and physical strength:

  • 3.90 – 4.20 meters: suitable for shorter anglers or when you don’t need to cast extremely far

  • 4.50 – 5.00 meters: ideal for tall anglers or situations where long casts are needed

  • Casting weight 150 – 250 grams: the heavier the weight, the further you can cast – choose based on current and distance

Tip: the longer the rod, the further you can cast – but only if you have the strength and technique to make use of that length difference.

Which reel and line do you use?

A powerful surf rod requires a large, saltwater-resistant reel with a spacious spool – for example a Big Pit or Surfcast reel. This allows you to cast smoothly and far. Most surf anglers use a nylon main line of 0.40 to 0.45 mm thick, often with a thicker nylon shock leader to absorb the impact of casting.

Proper maintenance is essential

Rinsing thoroughly with lukewarm tap water after each session is a must. Salt spray and sand are fatal for your rod and guides if you don’t clean them regularly. This way you keep your surf rod in top condition for years of fishing pleasure.

Complete surf rod sets

For those who want to get started quickly, there are ready-made surf rod sets. These often include a rod, reel, line, leaders and weights – everything you need to start right away. Ideal for beginners or as backup equipment.
