Spinners

Spinners: classic lures with deadly effect

Spinners have been a staple for predatory fish anglers for decades – and for good reason. They are easy to use, affordable, and extremely effective for catching perch, pike, and zander. Thanks to their vibrations and reflections, they attract predatory fish from a great distance.

How does a spinner work?

A spinner consists of a metal shaft with a rotating blade and a treble hook behind it. When retrieved, the blade rotates around the shaft causing a combination of vibrations, flickers, and slight resistance in the water. Predatory fish effortlessly pick up this signal with their lateral line organ and often strike instinctively.

Spinners are ready to fish immediately and require no complicated setup or technique. You cast them out, reel them in, and the action does the rest. By varying the speed and occasionally pausing, you imitate an injured fish – which often leads to a fierce bite.

What types of spinners are there?

Spinners come in various sizes, colors, and designs. There are compact models with one blade and larger tandem spinners with two blades for extra vibrations and visual stimuli. Some spinners are equipped with feathers or other decorations around the hook to attract extra attention.

Small spinners (up to 5 cm) are ideal for perch and trout. Medium and larger spinners (6 to 12 cm) are perfect for pike and zander.

Tips for effective fishing with spinners

  • Maintain a constant speed, but also experiment with short stops and accelerations.

  • In murky water, bright colors like red, yellow, or orange work best.

  • In clear water, it’s better to choose natural colors like silver, gold, or perch pattern.

  • Use a swivel to prevent your line from twisting.

Why spinners belong in your tackle box

Spinners are indestructible, versatile, and surprisingly effective – even on tough days. They work in both still and flowing water and are suitable for fishing from the shore or from a boat. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced predator angler: a few good spinners should not be missing from your tackle box.
