Spinnerbaits: irresistible lures for plant-rich spots
Spinnerbaits are a clever evolution of the classic spinner and a must-have for predatory fishers who like to fish among water plants or obstacles. Thanks to their unique construction and striking action, spinnerbaits are particularly effective for pike, perch, zander, and asp – especially at times when other lures get stuck in the greenery.
What is a spinnerbait?
A spinnerbait consists of a bent metal frame with a spinner blade (or multiple) on one side that spins, and on the other side a weighted hook decorated with a colorful ‘skirt’. This skirt, often made of rubber or plastic strands, mimics the movement of a baitfish and camouflages the hook. The spinner blade creates vibrations, light flashes, and pressure waves in the water – signals that predatory fish respond to immediately.
Why fish with spinnerbaits?
Spinnerbaits come into their own where plugs and shads fall short: among water plants, lily pads, or under overhanging branches. Thanks to their anti-weed design, they are less likely to snag and you can fish them through obstacles without problems. Moreover, the spinning blades and pulsating skirt attract predatory fish from a great distance.
-
In plant-rich waters: perfect choice for pike
-
Among structures such as branches or reeds: effective for perch and zander
-
During summer sessions: well suited for shallow water
How do you fish with spinnerbaits?
The most used technique is simply casting and retrieving at a constant speed. By occasionally making short stops during the retrieve (the stop-and-go technique), the skirt comes to life and your lure mimics an injured little fish – an irresistible trigger for hunting predatory fish. A light jerk at the start of the retrieve immediately activates the blades.
Which spinnerbait should you choose?
-
Weight: heavier models for deeper water, lighter for shallow
-
Blade size: the larger the blade, the more resistance – adjust your rod accordingly
-
Number of blades: one blade gives less resistance than two
-
Color: bright colors in murky water, natural colors in clear water
-
Skirt: rubber fringes increase visual attraction
When purchasing, pay close attention to the casting weight and take into account the extra resistance spinnerbaits create during retrieval. A 5g spinnerbait can feel heavier than a 10g plug!
