The right jig head for your shads: how to choose the perfect weight and model

When fishing with shads, the jig head, also called jighead, is an indispensable part of your equipment. It not only provides the casting weight but also the right action and presentation underwater. With the right model and weight, you fish more efficiently, naturally, and simply catch more.

Which jig head suits your fishing style?

There are countless types of jig heads, each with their own characteristics. The classic round jig head is the all-rounder among the jig heads. Suitable for many situations, especially in shallow or moderately deep water. Are you fishing with a slim or worm-like shad? Then an elongated or streamlined head is better. Do you want to present your softbait a bit more actively? Then you can choose a dart jig head or football jig head.

Which hook size fits your shad?

Shad length (cm) Recommended hook size (jig head)
4 – 5 cm #2 or #1
5 – 6 cm #1 or 1/0
6 – 7 cm 1/0 or 2/0
7 – 8 cm 2/0 or 3/0
8 – 9 cm 3/0 or 4/0
9 – 12 cm 4/0 or 5/0
12 – 15 cm 5/0 or 6/0
15+ cm 6/0 or larger + stinger

Note: this is a guideline. With slim or thick shads, it is best to check yourself where the hook comes out for the optimal balance between action and hooking.

Choosing weight: current and casting distance

The heavier the head, the faster you sink to the bottom and the further you cast. In still water or city ponds, a jig head of 6 to 10 grams is often sufficient. In flowing water or for long casts, you better choose 15 to 20 grams or more – provided your rod can handle it. Always take into account the maximum casting weight of your rod and the weight of your softbait itself.

Tips for assembly

Mark with a marker where the hook should come out of your shad. This prevents crooked assembly. Make sure there is at least one centimeter of space between the hook point and the back of your shad for optimal hooking. If necessary, you can secure your shad extra firmly on the hook with a drop of glue.
