Why choose fluorocarbon line?
The biggest advantage of fluorocarbon is its invisibility underwater. Thanks to the low refractive index, this line is hardly noticeable in clear water, which is ideal for catching shy fish such as zander, perch, and trout. Fluorocarbon also sinks faster than nylon and braided line, providing a direct connection to your bait on the bottom.
Properties of fluorocarbon
This line is made of Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), a strong and durable material that is insensitive to UV radiation and water absorption. As a result, fluorocarbon retains its strength and structure even after prolonged use. The abrasion resistance is excellent, making it ideal for fishing around obstacles such as mussel beds, stones, and bridge pillars.
Fluorocarbon as leader or shock leader
Due to its stiffness and strength, fluorocarbon is widely used as a leader in predator fishing – a thickness of 0.40 mm or more even withstands the sharp teeth of pike. Also, as a shock leader on a braided main line, fluorocarbon offers the perfect mix of invisibility, stretch, and abrasion resistance.
When fluorocarbon is not ideal
Although fluorocarbon offers many advantages, there are also considerations. The line is more expensive than nylon and has less tensile strength, which means a thicker diameter is needed. This slightly reduces casting distance and wind or current can grip the line more easily. For this reason, fluorocarbon is mainly used on the last meters of your line – as a leader or shock leader.
