LENGTH AND CASTING WEIGHT: MATCHING YOUR FISHING STYLE
The length of your jerkbait rod depends on where you fish. If you fish from low banks or from a boat, a shorter rod of about 1.80 - 1.90 metres is ideal to prevent your rod tip from hitting the water when tapping. However, if you fish from a high bank or a taller fishing boat, then you can opt for a longer rod up to about 2.20 metres.
You determine the casting weight of your rod based on the jerkbaits you use. Lighter jerkbaits require a rod with a lighter casting weight, while heavier jerkbaits need a stronger rod with a higher casting weight. For example, a diver that dives vertically needs a harder rod than a slider jerkbait that moves from left to right.
HANDLE LENGTH: COMFORT AND CONTROL
The handle length of your jerkbait rod is also of great importance. For lighter rods up to 50g, a shorter handle is usually used, which is ideal for single-arm casting and shorter distance fishing. For heavier jerkbaits, a longer handle is recommended, which offers more comfort and control when casting with two arms.
REEL SELECTION: LOW PROFILE FOR PRECISION
For jerkbait rod fishing, a low profile drop reel is often used. These reels lie low on the rod and offer comfort and ease while casting with one arm. It is important to choose a reel that matches the casting weight of your rod and the size of the jerkbaits used.
